Job Summary:
The Arborist in the Landscape Management Department of the Central Park Conservancy is responsible for inspection of trees, coordination of tree service requests, and review of all tree care work and programs set by the Lead Arborist.

Built between the years 1858 and 1873, Central Park is almost entirely man-made and considered to be a single work of art. Composed of natural elements – turf, woodlands, and water bodies, along with architectural elements, this 843-acre National Historic Landmark requires a unique set of skills to maintain these features to the highest standards. Founded in 1980, the mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to restore, manage and enhance Central Park in partnership with the public.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

Technical Operation

  • Inspect, plan, prioritize, and review all tree care work and programs
  • Inspect and monitor tree work to ensure compliance of organizational standards of methods and practices, safety and other established requirements
  • Monitor tree work and provide technical advice as needed
  • Identify hazard defects of trees and perform tree inspections using advanced diagnostic tools
  • Identify trees and shrubs by species and inspect for insect and disease pests
  • Provide field management of contracted services related to tree care, ensure contractor compliance and assist in maintaining records for services provided
  • The Arborist may be called upon to climb or operate an aerial lift to inspect, prune, perform tree removal and other related tree care tasks as assigned
  • Keep records on tablet computer and make written reports

Collaboration & Communication

  • Assist in the preparation of special events as needed
  • Cooperate with other staff within the department and other department personnel in completing assigned tasks
  • Displays the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups
  • Interact with Park patrons in a professional manner

 Related Work

  • Emergency storm response and work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
  • Utilizes rope and harness to climb.  Operates an Aerial Lift forestry truck, Chip truck, wood chipper, stump grinder, chainsaw and advance diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items that require repair
  • Participates in all training sessions and seminars
  • Daily reports of malfunctioning infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, quality of life issues
  • Perform related work as assigned 


Minimum Requirements:

  1. Associates Degree from accredited college in Arboriculture or related field; 1 year of increasingly responsible experience in the field of tree care maintenance
  2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above.  However, all candidates must have demonstrated the ability to work well and collaborate with others
  3. Valid Driver License.  A Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York within one year of being appointed to this position and maintained for the duration of employment.
  4. ISA Certified Arborist and TRAQ Qualified.
  5. Possess a fundamental understanding and knowledge of tree physiology using modern arboriculture practices.  Experience in urban tree care maintenance is desirable


Additional Requirements for Assignment to Arborist II

  1. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience as described above that is equivalent to 5 years’ experience;
  2. Demonstrated competency of essential job functions.
  3. CPC Internal Candidates - A satisfactory performance evaluation during each year of employment.


Abilities Required

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis in all weather conditions
