Job Summary:
The Central Park Conservancy is looking for a talented Director of Public Affairs and Communications to join the Brand and Communications Department. This role will help drive key strategic and tactical communications in multiple areas for the team, which will include media strategy, media relations, issues management, and social media with the goal of engaging with Park users, neighbors, visitors, community groups, and other stakeholders who benefit from the great urban oasis that is Central Park. The Conservancy restores, maintains, protects, and cares for Central Park 24/7/365. Using best in class media relations and public affairs skills, you will help us amplify all the great news about the Conservancy and its work to protect the Park and its purpose for generations to come.

About the Park

Built between the years 1858 and 1873, Central Park is almost entirely man-made and considered to be a single work of art. Composed of natural elements – turf, woodlands, and water bodies, along with architectural elements, this 843-acre National Historic Landmark receives 42 million visits from over 9 million unique visitors each year. Founded in 1980, the mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to restore, manage and enhance Central Park in partnership with the public.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Support communications objectives and issues management across areas, including but not limited to:
    • Public relations
    • Media relations
    • Multimedia press collateral
    • Public affairs
    • Social media
    • Internal communications
    • Stakeholder engagement
  • Develop and implement Conservancy communications plans for Park-related issues, visitor experience, public programs, fundraising, restoration work, and more
  • Drive media positioning and messaging in alignment with brand and Conservancy objectives
  • Work collaboratively within the Brand and Communications team to develop effective and engaging communications plans that support and are aligned with overall brand campaigns
  • Manage inbound media inquiries for communications issues and develop responses in coordination with internal stakeholders
  • Directly support senior executives across the organization in their external media engagements and media training
  • Bring an external communications perspective to internal stakeholders by providing guidance and recommendations on messaging considerations for various issues
  • Lead the development of communications multi-media collateral to support departmental objectives
  • Coordinate strategic announcements with internal and external partners and liaise with agencies
  • Engage with and effectively communicate Conservancy messaging to communities around the Park
  • Support strong internal communications and help to ensure a positive work culture by developing innovative employee messaging plans, working collaboratively with human resources, operations, and business administration to effectively reach employees
  • Develop content for internal databases
  • Build and maintain media relationships, lists, and databases for media and influencer outreach
  • Create dashboards and other analytics reports
  • Monitor media trends, analyze and make recommendations for action

Ideal Qualifications

  • 10 years communications experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field
  • Proven ability to develop creative, innovative, compelling, insight-based strategic communications plans
  • Excellent writing and editing abilities, with extensive experience in all forms of communication, from news releases to executive talking points
  • Experience pitching issues and events to top-tier media outlets
  • Experience with digital media and social networking tactics and campaign development
  • Experience with and ability for rapid response
  • Strong research and analytics skills to develop and support recommendations
  • A detail-oriented approach, with the ability to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality
  • An ability to work well within a team environment, complementing senior leads and managing junior staff
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple overlapping complex programs
  • Strong positive attitude, with sense of self-motivation and accountability
  • Hands-on manager who is both proactive and solution-oriented
  • Creative and energetic personality with a positive attitude and a true team player
  • Integrity, maturity, dependability, and a positive professional attitude
