Job Summary:
Working under the general supervision of the Foreperson of Park Maintenance, the Facility Maintainer in the Park Maintenance Department provides all manner of custodial care of all staff and public facilities within Central Park.

Built between the years 1858 and 1873, Central Park is almost entirely man-made and considered to be a single work of art. Composed of natural elements – turf, woodlands, and water bodies, along with architectural elements, this 843-acre National Historic Landmark requires a unique set of skills to maintain these features to the highest standards. Founded in 1980, the mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to restore, manage and enhance Central Park in partnership with the public.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

Technical Responsibilities

  • Perform basic custodial work for all facilities within an assigned section
  • Working with other Facility and Park Maintainers in addition to Landscape Management staff, provide custodial maintenance for all visitor centers, public restrooms, staff locker rooms, restrooms and common areas according to an established schedule to organizational standards
  • Clean all employee restrooms, locker rooms and common areas
  • Clean all visitor centers, public restrooms and other public spaces
  • Replenish all facilities with supplies such as soap, toilet paper and towels
  • Empties waste baskets and collects and disposes of refuse in all facilities
  • Sweep, mop and wax floors; wash walls and windows, and performs other cleaning duties
  • Lock doors to secure buildings
  • Perform snow removal and ice mitigation on paths, entrances, playgrounds, perimeter and other hard surfaces with machines and physical labor to provide appropriate levels of access as per established organizational standards


Collaboration & Communication

  • Assist in the preparation of special events as needed
  • Cooperate with other staff within the department and other department personnel in completing assigned tasks
  • Displays the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups
  • Interact with Park patrons and colleagues in a courteous in a professional manner


Related Work

  • Open and clean playgrounds and ensures all water features are turned on
  • Install and repair fence as needed and as directed
  • Support waste management operation by picking up and performing proper disposal of trash in landscapes, paths, perimeter and gardens; empties trash cans in the Park as necessary; sweeps around benches, stairs and entryways
  • Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rain storms and remaining snow and ice in the winter months
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items that require repair
  • Participates in all training sessions and seminars
  • Operate various types of equipment including utility vehicle, light or medium weight trucks and tractors
  • Daily reports of malfunctioning infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, quality of life issues
  • Perform related work as assigned  


Minimum Requirements:

  1. A four-year high school diploma or equivalent; and
  2. Demonstrated work experience; and
  3. Valid Drivers’ License that must be maintained for duration of employment


Additional Requirements for Assignment to Facility Maintainer II

  1. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience as described above that is equivalent to 5 years’ experience
  2. Demonstrated competency of essential job functions
  3. CPC Internal Candidates – A satisfactory performance evaluation during each year of employment


Abilities Required

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Staff in the Park Maintenance Department work two shifts, seven days per week
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis in all weather conditions
