Working closely with the Historian, the Manager of Historic Research and Interpretation will assist with various initiatives focused on interpretation the history and landscapes of Central Park. This work supports several aspects of the organization, including planning for restoration projects in the park, interpretative programs, park information, and internal and external communications about Central Park.

Reports to: Central Park Conservancy Historian

Department: Planning, Design, and Construction

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Position: 6011

Schedule: Weekend and evening work required per program schedules.

 

Position Overview

Working closely with the Historian, the Manager of Historic Research and Interpretation will assist with various initiatives focused on interpretation the history and landscapes of Central Park. This work supports several aspects of the organization, including planning for restoration projects in the park, interpretative programs, park information, and internal and external communications about Central Park.  

 

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  • Work with the Historian to develop content for and produce interpretative programming and resources, including signage, guided and self-guided tours, blogs, and exhibits by providing administrative support, conducting historic research, and writing content.
  • Work with public program staff to develop and implement interpretative programming.
  • Work with the Historian, other staff, and outside partners on the development of special projects and programs, including exhibits, publications, and lectures and other occasional programs.  
  • Work with the VP for Planning, Design, and Construction to conduct historic research to support planning for park restoration projects.  
  • Work with the Historian to develop and update park information resources including website, maps, signs, and FAQs.
  • Update Central Park Research Guide and handle external research requests.
  • Help to build mutually beneficial relationships with peer organization and institutions.
  • Other duties and related activities as required.

Position Requirements

  • BA required, with 5-7 years related work experience, including experience conducting research and writing.
  • Understanding of Central Park's cultural and natural significance and the Conservancy's mission and history, and a strong interest in promoting the role of the Conservancy as the Park's caretaker;
  • Strong research, writing, and presentation skills; Graphic skills, including familiarity with Adobe CS a plus;
  • Must be organized, motivated, team player, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts in a professional manner at all times;
  • Ability to flex a work schedule around programs and events as needed.
