Job Summary:
The Central Park Conservancy uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help manage park features and work records in its stewardship of Central Park. The Conservancy’s Data Staff support care and oversight of Central Park’s 20,000 trees, 9,000 benches, 2,500 light poles and 843 acres. The Operations Data & Asset Management intern works with the GIS Project Manager and Operations Data Coordinator to assist with park-wide GIS projects. These projects often include working with Central Park Conservancy’s Tree Care crew, Bench crew, Infrastructure crew or Women’s Committee. The intern will learn how data management can inform and support operational functions of an urban park.

Job Description:

Operations & Data Management Intern          

The Central Park Conservancy uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help manage park features and work records in its stewardship of Central Park. The Conservancy’s Data Staff support care and oversight of Central Park’s 20,000 trees, 9,000 benches, 2,500 light poles and 843 acres. The Operations Data & Asset Management intern works with the GIS Project Manager and Operations Data Coordinator to assist with park-wide GIS projects. These projects often include working with Central Park Conservancy’s Tree Care crew, Bench crew, Infrastructure crew or Women’s Committee.

The intern will learn how data management can inform and support operational functions of an urban park.

Duties include:

  • Assisting with field data collection and verification using ESRI mobile apps and Trimble GPS mobile unit
  • Map creation using Portal for ArcGIS
  • Evaluating, extracting, scrubbing, converting and analyzing spatial and non-spatial data for use in specific projects or general base mapping across many projects
  • Data organization, spatial thinking, and visual design of information

Requirements:       

  • Background/course work in environmental geomatics or fields related to environmental resource monitoring or management
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS software platform or comparable open source software (i.e. QGIS, Carto, Mapbox, etc.)
  • Strong interest in data management, urban park management, or the environmental sciences
  • Highly motivated, adventurous, and responsible
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a group
  • Ability to interact extensively with the public and cross-functionally with CPC Staff
  • Willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Valid driver’s license a plus, but not required
  • Familiarity with navigating Central Park a plus, but not required

Schedule:

Monday – Friday

7:00 am – 3:30 pm
