Job Summary:
Working under the general supervision of the Foreperson of Park Maintenance, the Park Maintainer in the Park Maintenance Department, provides all manner of custodial care of the park and other features.

Job Description:

Department:  Park Maintenance

Status:  Full-time, Non-Exempt

Built between the years 1858 and 1873, Central Park is almost entirely man-made and considered to be a single work of art. Composed of natural elements – turf, woodlands, and water bodies, along with architectural elements, this 843-acre National Historic Landmark requires a unique set of skills to maintain these features to the highest standards. Founded in 1980, the mission of the Central Park Conservancy is to restore, manage and enhance Central Park in partnership with the public


Summary of Essential Job Functions:

Technical Responsibilities

  • Provide general custodial care of park grounds within an assigned section
  • Working with other Park and Facility Maintainers in addition to Landscape Management staff, provide all manner of custodial maintenance of all landscapes, hardscapes, gardens, perimeter, playgrounds and other features in Central Park according to an established schedule to organizational standards
  • Remove all litter and other debris matter from assigned areas
  • Empty trash and recycling cans and deliver to collection areas within Park
  • Sweep all paths, entrances, bench areas, stairways, perimeter and other hard surface areas
  • Install and repair fence as needed and as directed
  • Perform snow removal and ice mitigation on paths, entrances, playgrounds, perimeter and other hard surfaces with machines and physical labor to provide appropriate levels of access as per established organizational standards
  • Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rain storms and remaining snow and ice in the winter months

 

Collaboration & Communication

  • Assist in the preparation of special events as needed
  • Cooperate with other staff within the department and other department personnel in completing assigned tasks
  • Interact with Park patrons and colleagues in a courteous and professional manner
  • Displays the necessary initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups

 

Related Work

  • Open and clean playgrounds and ensures all water features are turned on
  • Operate various types of equipment including utility vehicle, light or medium weight trucks and tractors
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items that require repair
  • Participates in all training sessions and seminars
  • Daily reports of malfunctioning infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, quality of life issues
  • Perform related work as assigned  

 

Additional Requirements for Assignment to Park Maintainer II

  1. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience as described above that is equivalent to 5 years’ experience
  2. Demonstrated competency of essential job functions
  3. CPC Internal Candidates – A satisfactory performance evaluation during each year of employment

 

Additional Requirements for Assignment to Park Maintainer III

  1. Requirements that are stated above for assignment to Park Maintainer II
  2. Ability to safely operate and drive packer truck on assigned route within Central Park and New York City streets
  3. Experience with hydraulic, rear loading compactor trucks
  4. Class B Commercial Drivers’ License valid in the State of New York and must be maintained for duration of employment

 

Minimum Requirements:

  1. A four-year high school diploma or equivalent; and
  2. Demonstrated work experience; and
  3. Valid Drivers’ License that must be maintained for duration of employment

Abilities Required

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Staff in the Park Maintenance Department work two shifts, seven days per week
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis in all weather conditions
