Job Summary:
The Zone Gardener is responsible for horticulture maintenance

Job Description:

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Mowing and String trimming
  • Maintenance of all essential lawn care equipment
  • Brush clearing, wood-chipping, and mulching
  • Understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance
  • Leaf removal, i.e. raking, sweeping, vacuuming and storage
  • Soil testing
  • Installing and repairing fence
  • Winter maintenance, i.e. shoveling, ice-chopping, salt spreading, and plowing
  • Planting and transplanting
  • Weeding
  • Debris and trash removal
  • Working closely with other staff members and volunteers, as well as members of Dept. of Parks and Recreation on a regular basis
  • Training seasonal staff
  • Interacting with park patrons in a professional manner as a representative of CPC
  • Navigation of New York City streets with large truck and trailer

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Two or more years of horticulture experience or degree in horticulture and/or related filed
  • Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of plant material including types of turf and turf pests
  • Strong communication skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • CDL and/or pesticide license recommended 

 

Abilities Required

  • Ability to work a varied schedule with overtime including weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Sufficient reading ability to understand simple instructions and schedules
  • Ability to perform simple tasks independently after being given assignments
  • Sufficient strength and manual dexterity to operate power equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to stand, crouch, and climb to use ladders and perform various types of manual labor
  • Willing and able to work outdoors all year round
