Early Blooms in Central Park

New York City has had a stretch of unseasonably warm weather, with temperatures hitting 60 degrees on the first day of February. The spring-like weather has blooms coming up early in Central Park — from witch hazel to snowdrops to daffodils.

"I'd say we're about a month early," says Maria Hernandez, the Conservancy's Director of Horticulture.

If winter does finally decide to arrive, a sudden drop in temperature won't necessarily put the blooms at risk. "They're really hardy," Hernandez explains. February's early blooms may mean, however, that "we won't get one of those spectacular springs where everything is blooming at the same time."

  • Central Park's Turtle Pond Turtle Pond

Like all of the other water bodies in Central Park, Turtle Pond is man-made – filled with New York City drinking water. However, you wouldn’t want to drink this water, since it’s filled with five species of turtles who live in the Pond year round.
