Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday, May 12, and Virginia Apple has had this year's gift to her mom planned since last Mother's Day. Every year Virginia gets her mother the same thing: flowers in Central Park, planted in her mom's name.
"It's the perfect gift for her," Virginia said. Most people enjoy giving gifts, but Virginia says her mom, Betsy, especially revels in giving. Around the holidays, it's common for many people to have a cabinet or shelf filled with gifts to give. "My mom," Virginia said, "has a whole room." For someone who enjoys giving so much, what could be better than, as Virginia describes it, a "gift that gives to others?" Betsy loves flowers and, each year, takes joy knowing that her gift is delighting thousands of Park visitors.
For such a unique gift, flower donations are not expensive. For only $50, fifty daffodils, tulips or mums will be planted in honor of someone you love. Additional flowers are a dollar each. "There are so many perfect moments to give the gift of flowers," Virginia said, adding that men and women seem to appreciate the gift equally. "My godfather was elated to receive them for his birthday. After all," she added, "who doesn't love flowers in Central Park?"
