On July 30, Park goers enjoyed a rare site in Central Park as the commemorative fountain on the southwest end of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir was activated with streams of water shooting 60 feet into the air.
Originally built in 1917 to celebrate the completion of the Ashokan-Reservoir and the dedication of the City's first water tunnel, the fountain has been reactivated to commence the year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Catskill system and recognize the impact its continuous supply of clean, fresh water has had on the City of New York. The Catskill and Delaware water supply systems are two of three watersheds that supply drinking water to nearly nine million New Yorkers.
The fountain will remain activated through the fall. |
