Are you a 7th, 8th, or 9th grader who would like to spend your Saturdays in Central Park? Are you a parent or guardian seeking an opportunity for your child to learn and grow in one of the world’s greatest outdoor classrooms? If so, now is the time to contact our Education Department. Our FREE Central Park Scholars program begins on Saturday, October 6, and we are currently accepting applications for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students throughout New York City.
In the past few years, our Scholars have participated in fun and challenging activities. The 7th graders have studied the Park’s environment — hiking through the North Woods; getting to know the Harlem Meer, one of the Park’s major water bodies; comparing trees and wildlife in Central Park to trees and wildlife in Black Rock Forest, a nearly 4,000-acre preserve 50 miles north of New York City, and where they enjoyed an overnight retreat last spring.
The 8th graders have studied the Park as a work of art and design — romping within Park playgrounds with design questions in mind, proposing changes to structures at the Park’s southern end, imagining what Central Park will look like in 100 years.
The 9th graders have worked to make the Park’s resources known to its neighbors and to NYC youth — planning and hosting our annual “Central Park Rocks!” event in the spring.
Years from now, when our Scholars look back on growing up in New York City, they will remember the Park as a very special place in their urban environment. How many city kids can say the same?
