Central Park Survey and Count Summer 2008

Central Park Survey and
Count Summer 2008

Calling All Volunteers!

The Central Park Conservancy is seeking volunteers to participate in the third round of our Park-wide survey and count, which will take place this February. In July and October, we collected more than 2,000 surveys thanks to the help of 200 volunteers, who really enjoyed interacting with Park users and spending time in the Park. This survey and count will be the most comprehensive study of Park use since 1982, the year the Conservancy created the management and restoration plan for Central Park. This survey is also the first to study Park use all four seasons, which is why we are braving the chill of February to collect information about Park use and users. Hot beverages will be served! Our goal is to interview a total of 5,000 Park users over the course of the year.

Volunteers will:

  • Receive training
  • Conduct interviews of Park users
  • Count Park users
  • Have a great time

Survey dates:

  • Sunday, February 1   (bad-weather date: Feb. 22)
  • Thursday, February 5  (bad-weather date: Feb. 12)
  • Saturday, February 7   (bad-weather date: Feb. 28)

 Training dates:

  • Thursday, January 15 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm
  • Wednesday, January 21 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Both trainings will take place at our offices on 1 East 104th Street at 5th Avenue, 2nd Floor
Additional trainings will be scheduled as needed.

Scheduling for the survey will take place at training sessions. We are asking volunteers to commit to a minimum of four hours (in two hour shifts).

This initiative coincides with the 150th Anniversary of the Greensward Plan, the original design for Central Park by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.  At this juncture in the Park’s history, it is important to look back, take stock of the Park in its present state, and look towards the future. We know that the Park is used by more people in more ways than ever. The more specific information gathered during the survey and count will help us to better serve the public during our ongoing restoration and management of the Park.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, please fill out the form below, or email us at survey@centralparknyc.org. We hope you will join us in February, but if you are more of a warm-weather person, we would love your help in April.
