What You Can Do

Reducing, Reusing, Recycling in Central ParkHere are some simple ways you can go green by emulating
the Central Park Conservancy's practices:

  • Carry In, Carry Out

There is no more lovely setting to celebrate early spring than the blooming landscapes of Central Park. Next time you plan a picnic in the Park, pack a cloth bag or cooler. Carry in your treats and carry out your trash. Why not show your style and environmental savvy and BYOB (bring your own bag)?

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

You’ll notice iconic blue recycling bins for bottles and cans at the Great Lawn and Heckscher and North Meadow Ballfields. But what about the other guidelines from this mantra? For example, reduce waste by reusing a polycarbonate bottle for your beverages. And it’s perfect for bringing to the Park.

We love this 36-oz. green option (at right), emblazoned with the Conservancy’s logo, available at our online store, www.centralparknyc.org/store, or at the Dairy Visitor Center & Gift Shop, mid-Park at 65th Street.

  • Composting

Composting is one of the simplest and most effective recycling methods. Both your garden cuttings and your green kitchen waste can go into an outdoor or indoor composter. If you don't have a garden, find neighbors or a community garden that can make use of your compost.

  • Grow For It!

Don’t be discouraged if you are an urban dweller with little more than a potted plant. You can still enjoy a summer of squash and strawberries. Sign up for a plot at your local community garden. Many of the City’s community gardens offer educational workshops, children’s programs, food pantries, and block parties. Find your garden at http://www.greenthumbnyc.org/

Not ready to test your green thumb? Shop at a greenmarket in any of the five boroughs and find luscious, local treats.   There is a greenmarket on the Park’s perimeter at 106th Street and Central Park West (Saturdays, July to November).
