Each day at Camp Central Park promises a new and fun adventure! Listed below are the Summer Adventure programs that are available. Each program emphasizes a particular theme. Please choose one theme for each two-week session you are requesting. Note: All campers attend an outdoor recreational swim session at least once per week (weather permitting) at Lasker Pool, located in Central Park at 108th Street, and participate in rock climbing and other recreational activities. Advanced registration only, walk in registration not available. CENTRAL PARK EXPLORERS: As Central Park Explorers, campers will have an opportunity to experience all of what Central Park has to offer. Central Park has an extensive collection of one-of-a-kind attractions, all of which have a rich history. Campers aged 6 - 11 years will visit these attractions, gaining an understanding and appreciation for the wonders only Central Park can provide. However, it doesn't end there, each day is also filled with other fun activities such as swimming, playgrounds, and various other children's games. The Central Park Explorers program is built to foster creativity, growth of knowledge as well as physical fitness and FUN (after all, it’s camp!). CLIMBING ADVENTURES: A hands-on introduction to the thrill and challenge of climbing. Campers aged 9 - 11 years learn the basics of climbing, including technique, balance and safety, as well as knot-tying, belaying and harnesses. Our indoor and outdoor climbing walls feature a small roof, steep angles and an arête. By the end of each 2-week sessions, Climbing Adventures campers are able to belay each other and climb on actual rock face within Central Park. JUNIOR NATURALISTS: As Junior Naturalists, campers aged 6 - 8 years explore Park woodlands, lakes, and gardens looking for wildlife and other natural treasures. Campers get “down and dirty” investigating aquatic organisms, bird behavior, and the fragile forest ecosystem of the North Woods. Junior Naturalists also study geology and trace the paths of ancient glaciers in the Park. Equipped with poles and bait, they learn the ABC's of fish life while having fun catch- and- release fishing in the beautiful Harlem Meer. All sessions create a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world with specific sessions focusing on Wildlife, Pond Study, Trees & Flowers, and Birds.
Program Leaders: The Central Park Conservancy's Recreation Department has been providing quality summer programming since 1990. Program coordinators and counselors are creative, nurturing, and specially trained. All counselors have previous experience working with children, and are certified in Basic First Aid and CPR. A low participant-to-staff ratio assures each child a quality summer camp experience. Campers in these groups should be dropped off at the North Meadow Recreation Center between 8:00 am and 8:30 am. Campers will be dismissed promptly at 3:00 pm from the same location.
