To the west of the Dairy, on a large bedrock outcrop (called the Kinderberg or "children's mountain"), stands the brick Chess & Checkers House. The City built the house in 1952 to replace the Park's largest and most ornate rustic wood summerhouse. On Sunday, May 27, 2007, after restoration work by the Central Park Conservancy, the Chess & Checkers House reopened as a new visitor center and volunteer headquarters.
Today, chess and checkers players gather at the Chess & Checkers House's 24 chess tables under a modern-day pergola to match wits and enjoy the summer shade. You can bring your own game pieces, or borrow them inside by 4:00 pm (must be returned by 4:30 pm). Advance registration not required. Additional free programs happening at the Chess & Checkers House include:
Holiday Crafts At the Chess & Checkers House When its too cold to linger outside, stop in for a festive afternoon filled with seasonally-themed arts and crafts.
Summer Chess Programs At the Chess & Checkers House This exciting series of chess lectures and "Simul" (simultaneous) games is conducted by local grandmasters.
