Class departs from the North Meadow Recreation Center, located mid-Park at 97th Street.
Program is appropriate for ages 14 and up (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)
Advance registration and fee required, see below for details.

Mountain Man comes to the Big Apple! Learn basic wilderness skills related to shelter, water, fire, food, plants/trees, primitive skills, tracking, awareness, and movement with Shane "White Feather" Hobel, founder of Mountain Scout Survival School and primary member of the national Tracker Search & Forensic Investigation Team. This is a beginner level class, but don't be fooled – the 8-hour day is jam-packed with sacred knowledge, lectures, and skills practice that will help you appreciate and enjoy nature -- whether in an urban environment like Central Park or a remote wilderness. Central Park's northern landscapes around the North Meadow Recreation Center and the 100th Street Pool will provide the backdrop for your "urban wilderness" learning experience.

About Shane Hobel

Since he was a very young child, Shane Hobel (also known as “White Feather”) has dedicated himself to two pursuits that have merged into a truly unique way of life: applying survival skills to his love of nature, and mastering martial arts.

Shane holds a Go-Renshi Dan (5th Degree Black Belt) in the original forms of traditional Okinawan Karate, certifications in Wilderness First Responder, CPR, and First Aid, and is a Licensed Guide by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Some of his experiences include performing professional stunts and stage combat, working with the American Red Cross, and instructing martial arts and Nature programs. Shane has over twenty years of teaching experience. His studies under Tom Brown Jr. and Stalking Wolf, a Native Scout, particularly influenced his development.

Today, Shane continues his study of ancient tracking methods at the world-renowned “Tracker School” in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.
