7th Regiment Memorial


 

This statue honors the 58 men of the 7th Regiment who died defending the Union during the Civil War. Created by American sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, the bronze pieces depicts an American soldier, hands at rest on his rifle. Officers and members of the regiment funded the sculpture, and Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of the Park, suggested the statue's pose. Ward himself unveiled the piece during its dedication in June 1874, The statue, originally slated to stand at Warrior's Gate at Central Park North and Seventh Avenue, it stands today in its original spot selected by Olmsted.
