Alexander von Humboldt
Dedicated in 1869, this bronze bust depicts German scientist and naturalist Frederick Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt. Donated by the Humboldt Memorial Association, it originally stood at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue before moving to its current location at Explorer's Gate across from the Museum of Natural History. German artist Gustaf Blaeser, an acquaintance of Humboldt, used his death mask as a reference to sculpt the bust.
In 1993, the Central Park Conservancy's conservation team did work to preserve the bronze sculpture.
