The narrow inlet of water at the northern tip of the Lake, Bank Rock Bay is a popular bird-watching area that lies just beyond Oak Bridge. In 2009, the Conservancy restored the structure, also known as Bank Rock Bridge. The complex project involved almost entirely new construction and was based on the Calvert Vaux-designed bridge built in the same spot in 1860.
In 2008, the Conservancy restored the shores of Bank Rock Bay as part of a larger restoration effort of the Lake. Conservancy staff removed sediment, reconstructed the eroding shoreline, and put in thousands of new plantings. The result is a stabilized water body and a healthy habitat for varied wildlife that calls Central Park home.
