Constructed in 1862, Glade Arch is among Calvert Vaux’s first designed bridges and arches. Its low elliptical arch features light-colored New Brunswick sandstone, measuring almost 30 inches across and 10 feet high.
The arch originally carried carriage traffic to Fifth Avenue, but today provides a wide walkway for visitors. The structure weathered much deterioration over the years, culminating with severe damage to its balustrade in 1980 caused by a snowplow. A year later, the Central Park Community Fund, a precursor to the Conservancy, joined other groups in funding the arch’s total restoration.
