The Doris C. Freedman Plaza is located at the southeast corner of Centra Park and is home to rotating sculptural art installations, courtesy of the City's Public Art Fund. It is named for the founder of the Public Art Fund and has been the site of more than 50 such projects since 1977.
The current displayed work is a sculpture by artist Michael Sailstorfer titled "Tornado." The piece stands more than 25 feet tall and features one hundred distinct "clouds" of inner tube truck tires. Each is secured individually and rustles in the wind, evoking the movement of a swirling cyclone. It is the German artist's first work of public art in the United States.
