Inscope was one of three structures built during the 1870s in response to the overflow of pedestrians competing with horseback riders and carriage drivers. (The others were Gapstow Bridge and Outset Arch). Just east of the Pond, Inscope is tucked away from view and one of the Park’s less frequently used arches.
The elegant arch designed by Calvert Vaux was constructed of pink and gray granite. Featuring a 34-foot long Tuscan archway, Inscope today is used as a route to the Central Park Zoo and the Arsenal.
