As monuments to Latin American heroes, it is fitting that the three horsemen in the Artists' Gate Plaza, José Martí, Simon Bolivar, and José de San Martin, stand at the head of the Avenue of the Americas. Martí, Cuban patriot, journalist and poet, fought for the liberation of Cuba from Spanish rule. The statue shows the moment when Martí was mortally wounded, with the rearing horse dramatically reacting to the violence.
