The name Frederick Law Olmsted is synonymous with Central Park. Yet, the only tribute to the Park architect within its 843 acres is this memorial flowerbed. It’s appropriately placed just south of Literary Walk, with its magnificent stand of American elms – Olmsted’s favorite tree.
Little-known by most Park visitors, the flowerbed was created in 1972 to commemorate Olmsted’s 150th birthday anniversary. With its plantings of beautiful annuals and perennials, the landscape offers the year-round color of tulips, pansies, phlox, azaleas, Cherry Laurel and Japanese Maple.
