The Saturday ROOTS program is for individual teens in grades 9 to 12 and provides a longer-term engagement and deeper level of education. It's a fun way for high school students to learn about the environment, meet teens with similar interests and develop leadership skills.
Led by environmental educators, Saturday ROOTS students learn about urban forest and ecology by participating in the ecological restoration and management of Central Park's woodlands. Projects include the removal of invasive plants, planting native plants and trail maintenance. Students earn community service hours for their time and regular attendance is required.
Acceptance into Saturday ROOTS is through a competitive application process. Applications are available in December for the spring semester and June for the fall semester. Get your application online.
Spring Semester: March - May
Fall Semester: October - November

Woodlands Youth Education Programs: ROOTS, Saturday ROOTS, and Woodlands Youth Crew are sponsored by The Heckscher Foundation for Children.
Bethesda Fountain
Rising from Bethesda Terrace is Bethesda Fountain, with the famous Angel of the Waters statue atop. The statue references the Gospel of John, which describes an angel blessing the Pool of Bethesda and giving it healing powers.
