Burnett Fountain

Burnett Fountain is a gorgeous memorial to classic children’s book author Frances Hodgson Burnett. Set among the flowers of Conservatory Garden’s South Garden, the fountain features a bronze sculpture of a boy playing the flute and a young girl holding a bowl that functions as a bird bath. Some believe these figures to represent Mary and Dickon, two central figures in Burnett’s novel The Secret Garden.

When Burnett died in 1924, her friends and admirers sought to build a memorial they thought best suited the popular novelist. After years of searching, they found a home for it among the beauty of a flowering garden. The sculpture stands on the edge of a small concrete pool that features a variety of blooming waterlilies every summer and fall.
