Statement from the Central Park Conservancy on Fatal Bicycle Incident in Central Park

NEW YORK—Following the death of 41-year-old Richie O'Brien from injuries suffered after being hit by a cyclist in Central Park last week, a spokesperson for the Central Park Conservancy issued the following statement:

“We are devastated to learn that Richie O'Brien, a pedestrian walking his bike across East Drive in Central Park, has passed away from injuries after he was hit by a cyclist. On behalf of everyone at the Central Park Conservancy, we share our deepest condolences with his family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.

"It is unacceptable that walkers, runners, cyclists, tourists and locals alike should have to fear injury or worse while enjoying a greenspace that has served as a peaceful respite and backyard for millions of New Yorkers for more than 150 years. Keeping everyone who uses Central Park safe must be our highest priority.

"We urgently ask our partners at the Department of Transportation, the Mayor's Office, and the New York City Council to increase enforcement of existing rules and regulations. The Conservancy renews its call to improve the infrastructure in and surrounding the Park to prevent such incidents in the future, and supports current legislative efforts to enhance safety on the Drives."
