Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus stands at the southern edge of the Mall, just outside the Olmsted Flower Bed. Crafted by Spanish artist Jeronimo Sunol, the monument was made to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage where Columbus first landed in the Americas.

Unveiled in 1894, the statue depicts the famous Italian explorer in a pious position, with his arms flung open and eyes gazing upward. It is one of two statues in Central Park featuring Christopher Columbus; the other stands in Columbus Circle at the southwest corner of the Park.
