MEET THE ARTIST: A Q&A WITH UPTOWN ROYALTY
How would you describe your music or performance style?
Uptown Royalty delivers a dynamic, genre-defying fusion of salsa, R&B, and jazz, creating a sound that is both timeless and electrifying. Founded by Bronx native Jodi Music and her husband, Washington Heights native Ron Renaissance, the band was built on a shared vision to craft unforgettable live music experiences that move audiences emotionally and physically.
What does a live audience feel, hear, or experience when they see you perform?
More than a performance, Uptown Royalty creates an immersive experience. We sing, play live instruments, and dance, bringing high-energy showmanship and authentic musicianship to every stage. Our connection with the audience transforms each event into a celebration, where rhythm, soul, and passion come alive.
Audiences don’t just hear our music, they feel it. From the pulse of Latin percussion to the smooth soulfulness of R&B and the improvisational spirit of jazz, Uptown Royalty delivers a vibrant, engaging performance that leaves a lasting impression.
Being a husband-and-wife band that also performs with our close friends makes this band extra special. We are rooted in love, and you can feel that from the moment you hear us.
What inspires your work?
Our work is inspired by all of our stories growing up in NYC and being kids in music programs. We were raised by after-school music programs and we never forget where we came from—it’s a big part of who we are. Rooted in the rich cultural heartbeat of New York City, our performances celebrate diversity, rhythm, and soul. We don’t just perform, we ignite the stage. With powerful vocals, vibrant choreography, and high-energy musicianship, we captivate audiences of all backgrounds and transform every festival into a celebration of life, love, and family—something we feel very strongly about, especially with the climate of the world today.
What is the connection between your work and the Harlem community?
Jodi Music is from the Bronx and Ron Renaissance is from Washington Heights, but we have collaborated with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, Harlem Nights Festivals, the Victoria in Harlem, the New York City Marathon in Harlem—performing for the runners—and love Harlem very much! We’ve also performed at Melba’s summer block parties and at Red Rooster, where we began our relationship over eight years ago. Harlem is home for us!
