Lehman Gates

Lehman Gates

The Lehman Gates provide a whimsical entrance to the Tisch Children’s Zoo. Bronze animals, birds, and boys with panpipes play gleefully at the top of an ornamental Art Deco crest. The sculpture was designed by Paul Manship, known for the Prometheus statue at Rockefeller Center.

Manship is one of the most well-represented artists in the Park – his other works include the Group of Bears sculpture at Ruth and Arthur Smadbeck-Heckscher East Playground and the Osborn Gates at Ancient Playground.

The Lehman Gates were donated in 1961 by Governor and Mrs. Herbert H. Lehman in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary and the opening of the Children’s Zoo.
