Statement from Central Park Conservancy President and CEO, Betsy Smith

NEW YORK, NY (Wednesday, December 17, 2025) —The Central Park Conservancy supports the City’s decision to lower the speed limit on Central Park’s Drives to 15 mph. This change puts safety first and reflects the reality that the Drives are shared spaces used by millions of New Yorkers and visitors each year.

As private cars have been removed and use of the Drives has evolved, higher speeds by both electric and non-electric bikes have become a growing concern. A clear, consistent speed limit helps to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and motorists and makes the Drives safer and more predictable for everyone.

We commend the City for taking this step to improve safety in Central Park. Slowing traffic, combined with enhanced enforcement and thoughtful design, will help ensure that the Park remains a place of respite, recreation, and connection. We look forward to continued collaboration with the City so that everyone feels safe walking, jogging, and riding in Central Park.
