Shakespeare Garden Restoration

The Conservancy is making a few improvements to Shakespeare Garden, including adding handrails and replacing rustic wood fences, benches, and curbs. This work is being done in conjunction with site improvements surrounding the Delacorte Theater.

Originally created in 1912, Shakespeare Garden is a densely planted green space with trees, shrubs, flowers, and herbs found in Shakespearean literature, with Shakespeare quotes written on bronze plaques. Located on the west side of Central Park at 79th Street, Shakespeare Garden sits fittingly close to the Delacorte Theater, the venue for the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park.

The Conservancy is making improvements to Shakespeare Garden, including replacing and adding rustic wood fencing and benches, reconstructing wood decking and stairs, adding handrails, replacing stone steps, and improving curbs. This work is being done in conjunction with site improvements surrounding the Delacorte Theater and adjacent public restrooms.

Starting in fall 2025, the Conservancy will be restoring the Garden in several phases, with expected completion in spring 2026. The Garden will remain open throughout construction.
