East 110th Street Playground Restoration

As part of our State of Good Repair program, the Central Park Conservancy is making focused improvements at the East 110th Street Playground. The scope of work includes new composite play structure elements, new safety surfacing, and fence upgrades.

The East 110th Street Playground is located at the north end of Central Park, adjacent to the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center on the north shore of the Harlem Meer. With a wooden boardwalk weaving between five play areas, the East 110th Street Playground blends structured play with the naturalistic landscape.

Built in 1936, the East 110th Street Playground was 1 of 19 playgrounds constructed under a citywide initiative led by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses and supported by the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA). The playground was designed to provide a safe and engaging recreational space for young children while preserving the beauty of Central Park.

Several playground reconstructions have occurred over time at East 110th Street. The most recent project, in 2013, included the introduction of the five play areas, a composite play structure, a tire swing, a spray feature, and a nature trail. New paths, improved drainage, lawn restoration, and new plantings were also added.

This spring, the Conservancy will start construction on a project to replace elements of the composite play structure, install new safety surfacing, and upgrade fencing. This project is part of the Conservancy’s State of Good Repair program, which is a cyclical maintenance program to ensure Central Park’s playgrounds remain in a state of good repair for park users and visitors alike.
