Tour: Water in Focus

Join us for a spotlight on how water shapes the visitor experience in the Park’s north end.
Natural waterways existed long before the creation of Central Park. But it was the construction of an aqueduct—built at the same time as the Park—that made many of the water features we know today possible. Natural features were enhanced, and several lakes were created and added to the landscape. To celebrate this vital resource, decorative fountains were introduced, many inspired by timeless themes. For recreational purposes, in the winter, frozen water offers us the joy of ice skating. In more modern times, swimming in the summer provides New Yorkers an escape from the heat. Today, these recreational traditions continue, supported by thoughtful infrastructure enhancements that ensure water remains a source of beauty, play, and refreshment in Central Park.
