Giuseppe Mazzini

A bronze bust was commissioned by a group of Italian-Americans to honor Giuseppe Mazzini, a man who shaped the modern state of Italy even during his decades of exile. Mazzini was a philosopher, activist, and politician who campaigned ceaselessly for his cause: unify Italy as a republic of the people.

His bust, which overlooks Sheep Meadow, was created by Italian-born sculptor Giovanni Turini and dedicated in 1878. Inscribed on the granite base are Italian phrases describing two of Mazzini’s major beliefs: Pensiero Ed Azione ("thought and action", also the name of a journal he founded in London) and Dio E Il Populo ("God and the people”).
