Samuel F. B. Morse

Samuel F.B. Morse

Just inside the Inventor’s Gate at 72nd Street and 5th Avenue, the Samuel F.B. Morse statue depicts the American inventor and painter on a large marble pedestal. Morse rests one hand on his single-wire telegraph, and the other clasps a strip of Morse code.

Sculpted by Byron M. Picket in 1871, the statue is one of two sculptures in the Park that memorializes the profession of the named gate (the other is Alexander Von Humboldt at Naturalists' Gate). The statue was originally located on the Mall, close to the Concert Ground. It was moved to its present location in 1985.
