The Park Needs Us

Central Park is a living work of art, and even life-long New Yorkers don’t know its biggest secret—that it is cared for by us—the Central Park Conservancy.

Funded primarily by individual donations, the Conservancy stewards every aspect of Central Park. We’re a group of 300+ committed and experienced staff members—from conservators and gardeners to architects and groundskeepers—and all of us lend a hand in caring for the Park. And contrary to popular belief, the Conservancy, not the City of New York or taxpayer dollars, sustains this iconic green oasis thanks to the support of our dedicated community.

We beam with pride when we see the work of our staff and believe it’s important to tell their story. Meet the Conservancy’s Natural Areas Technician, Dexter, who is responsible for the maintenance and care of the entire Park landscape. Dexter and his colleagues performed a fish rescue in the Harlem Meer. An essential task that’s part of a larger initiative to transform the obsolete and crumbling Lasker Rink and Pool site on the Harlem Meer—the most significant and complex project ever undertaken by the Conservancy.

“I used to come to Central Park all the time when I was a kid. I think environmental work and green jobs are really important. So this is exciting stuff. This is what I sign up for.” – Dexter, Natural Areas Technician, Central Park Conservancy.
