The trout lily is a spring ephemeral common in eastern North America; look for it in bloom in the North Woods in April and May. It features bell-shaped yellow flowers and green-gray leaves mottled with brown or gray, which is where it gets its name. The leaves are said to resemble the coloring of brook trout.
