MEET THE ARTIST: A Q&A WITH THE GRACE YOUNG EXPERIENCE

How would you describe your music or performance style?

I bring a dynamic blend of theatrical storytelling and soulful musicality to every stage. A Detroit native and Juilliard-trained musical theatre artist, my sound is deeply influenced by the classic Motown era, enriched with jazz phrasing, R&B warmth, and the spiritual depth of gospel.

My performances are both intimate and electrifying, combining expressive vocals, emotional authenticity, and a natural ability to engage audiences. Whether performing in theatre productions, Harlem venues, or on international stages, my style reflects a celebration of heritage, resilience, and joy.

What does a live audience feel, hear, or experience when they see you perform?

When audiences see me perform, they feel the soul of Detroit, the spirit of gospel, and the storytelling of theatre all in one experience. They hear music that’s rooted in Motown and shaped by jazz and R&B, but more importantly, they feel a connection. My goal is always to take listeners on a journey—to remind them of where they’ve been, inspire where they’re going, and leave them uplifted.

When I perform, audiences feel a deep sense of nostalgia—especially through the Motown classics that bring back memories of family, love, and home. There is joy and upliftment in the room, rooted in my gospel foundation, creating an atmosphere of hope and celebration.

What inspires your work?

I am inspired by where I come from—Detroit, the heart of Motown—and by the music that filled my childhood home. Gospel music inspires my spirit, and theatre inspires the way I tell stories.

But I am equally inspired by the children I teach every day. Their curiosity, resilience, and imagination remind me that music has the power to shape lives. My work is driven by the desire to uplift, educate, and create spaces where people feel seen and valued.

What is the connection between your work and the Harlem community?

My connection to the Harlem community is both artistic and educational. Harlem has been my home, my stage, and my classroom. I have performed in local venues, partnered with church communities, and used my creative voice to bring awareness to important social issues such as domestic violence.

Beyond the stage, I work with young children in Harlem, helping to strengthen their language and literacy skills. My vision of creating libraries in students’ homes is rooted in my commitment to uplifting families in this community. Harlem is not just where I perform—it is where I serve.
