Japanese Zelkova

The Japanese zelkova is a popular shade and lawn tree with dark green leaves in the summer and yellow to red leaves in the fall. There are several Japanese zelkovas between Heckscher Playground and Driprock Arch.

  • Leaves

    Oblong, 3 inches long, ovate, serate, rough on top

  • Fruit

    Tiny egg-shaped droops, mature in autumn

  • Flower

    1/8" long, clustered at base of new leaves, greenish

  • Bark

    Peeling, gray-brown revealing with orange-brown patches underneath
